Engineers design bespoke Christmas tree stands for Magellan

Level 2 mechanical engineering students from SERC have spent the past few weeks working tirelessly to design and manufacture forty bespoke Christmas tree stands under the supervision of tutor William Henderson. The stands were produced for Magellan Aerospace and are being donated to charity.   

Jason Latimer from Magellan who instigated the project was delighted that the apprentices were able to help and with the finished product.  

Tutor William Henderson explains the project: "Work experience is a vital part of any apprenticeship programme and projects such as this allow students who have not secured a work placement, to apply their classroom learning in a practical, real life environment. This innovative approach to the delivery of apprenticeships helps students gain work experience whilst also making a valuable contribution to the community.

“Traditionally, students who have not secured a placement with a company are placed on a Project apprenticeship. The programme provides an alternative to work placement for students, ensuring they develop workplace skills and technical knowledge, whilst also making a positive contribution to the community.

“Not only are the apprentices gaining valuable work experience that will eventually help them gain full-time employment, they are also giving something back to the community. It is refreshing to see young people having such a positive impact on their local community."
