Animal Care student highlights pet awareness for Halloween

Animal Care students highlights pet awareness for Halloween   Animal care student Saoirse O’Hanlon, joined by her lecturer Diane McKay, spoke to 105FM community radio co-ordinator, Colm McAlinden, to highlight the precautions pet owners should take on the run up to the Halloween festivities.

Saoirse highlighted points such as treats and advised that only appropriate pet treats should be used when it comes to treating our beloved friends. Saoirse went on to advise that dogs or cats may venture outdoors during trick or treating, which may provide them with an opportunity to escape, frightened by the noise of fireworks.

Furthermore, it was suggested to check for wildlife in bonfires, were hedgehogs may have already begun to build a nest for their new habitat, unaware that it is soon to be engulfed in flames.

SERC lecturer Diane McKay said, “It is great to see our students proactively increasing awareness to help save the lives of innocent and unaware animals at this time of year. While we realise Halloween is coming, the animals unfortunately do not. This group of students are clearly passionate about caring for animals and it provides a good platform to allow them to work professionally in the industry to help serve and protect pets and wildlife.”
