Lisburn Jobclub student wins Northern Ireland Independent skills competition

Recently, SERC Job club students from Lisburn Campus took part in the inter-college Northern Ireland final of the Independent skills competition.

SERC was represented by Sophie McNeill from Lisburn and Conor Bassett from Moira who came first and second respectively during the inter-campus competition held last month.  

SFYL is a course designed for students who seek a new opportunity after their compulsory education and aims at providing students with qualifications that will help them gain employment.

Organised through Inclusive Skills Competitions, the event was designed to enable young people with learning difficulties and disabilities to showcase their work skills and growing independence. 

  After a long day and some tough competition, the competitors waited in suspense to hear the winners announced. Huge congratulations must go to Sophie MacNeill who deservedly took home first prize with Conor Bassett doing tremendously well too taking home second prize.

Deputy Head of School, Michelle Hickland said, "This event was a fantastic opportunity for the students to demonstrate the skills they have been learning throughout the course as well as meeting students from the other colleges.”

She continued, "I’m so proud of both Sophie and Conor. They have proved they have the drive and skills necessary to succeed.”

Sophie now could be invited to take part in national finals at WorldSkills UK LIVE, at the NEC Birmingham, in November.
