SERC welcomes back former student Kyle McKee

SERC’s Bangor Campus recently welcomed back former construction and built environment student Kyle McKee. Kyle was invited to speak to current students about the exciting job opportunities and possible career paths within the sector.

Kyle left school after his GCSE’s and during his time at SERC was named Pearson UK Construction student of the Year 2015.  Kyle is currently in year two of his Civil Engineering degree at Queen's University Belfast and is about to progress onto his placement year with Engineering consultants Arup in their environmental section.

During his visit, Kyle spoke to Level 3 BTEC Construction and built environment students about a career in Civil Engineering. He explained the range of job opportunities available and the possible career paths to follow. Kyle said “Civil engineers design, build, supervise, operate, and maintain construction projects and systems in the public and private sector, including roads, buildings, airports, tunnels, dams, bridges, and systems for water supply and sewage treatment. The possibilities are endless.”

He continued, “The well-established construction sector in Northern Ireland is growing again with many projects starting up and after the recession there are great training opportunities as Apprentice Civil Engineers with companies across NI.”

Simon Cummings, SERC deputy head of school for construction and engineering services said “This was a great opportunity for the students to hear first-hand how a former student has progressed and shows them that the sky’s the limit for their own careers. I am extremely grateful to Kyle for taking the time to come back to college and speak with the students.”
