Decorations students have made include cardboard pumpkins, homemade ghosts and autumn-inspired crafts using natural materials collected from the local parks.

These ideas demonstrate how everyday items can be transformed into exciting educational resources as well as highlighting the importance of reducing waste and protecting the environment. Literacy for child learning is supported through Halloween stories, rhymes, songs, creative storytelling and early writing through playful activities. Numeracy for children is encouraged through counting pumpkins, sorting objects, recognising shapes and creating patterns.

SERC Deputy Head of School Karyn Eldon said, “Our students are showing how sustainability, literacy and numeracy can be combined through creative activities that inspire young children to learn and care for the environment. The initiative demonstrates that sustainable choices can make learning meaningful, enjoyable and environmentally responsible, and the activities provide practical ideas for students to take into their futures in early years practice.
