A South Eastern Regional College (SERC) lecturer is preparing to take to the stage in Ibiza this month as his electronic music project continues to gain international recognition.
Nik Thomas, Lecturer in Creative Media at SERC, performing under Muzka, is part of electronic music trio Visions of Light. Alongside his musical collaborators, Simon Sheldon and Dan Dub, Nik has built a growing reputation within the electronic music scene, with releases gaining support from listeners across the UK and Europe.
The trio will return to Ibiza in October following the success of appearances on the island last year, where they launched their debut album Mandala Vortex on respected Ibiza-based label NuNorthern Soul. The launch attracted more than 100 music enthusiasts from Northern Ireland and across the UK, helping to cement the band's growing profile on the international stage.
The group were invited back to Ibiza as they prepare for the release of their latest vinyl album, Mycelium Bloom, also on NuNorthern Soul. The new release follows a productive period for the trio, whose work has featured on Freebooter Lounge, a label dedicated to supporting and developing local electronic music producers while showcasing artists from across Europe. Speaking ahead of the trip, Nik said: "Music has always been a huge creative outlet for me, alongside my work in education. Being invited back to Ibiza after such a positive experience last year is incredibly exciting. It's a fantastic opportunity to share our music with an international audience and connect with people who are passionate about electronic music."
During their visit, Visions of Light will perform a series of live shows and DJ sets across the island, including Friday 9 October - Visions of Light Live at Akasha; Saturday 10 October - DJ Set at Word of Mouth; and Sunday 11 October - Visions of Light Live at Word of Mouth.
The Ibiza performances come ahead of another major live date closer to home, when the trio will perform at Sandinos in Derry/Londonderry on 4 December. They also maintain a regular presence on the local music scene with appearances at Sunday Circles in Muriel's, Belfast, while Nik is a monthly resident DJ at Ulster Sports Club in Belfast.
