Emma recently gained a promotion to a managerial level position in her work and was looking for a qualification to support her in her now role. After conducting some research, she discovered the Leadership & Productivity Improvement apprenticeship at SERC and decided that it was the right course for her.

Emma says, “I work at British Red Cross as a Training Team Leader. I manage a team that is spread across Northern Ireland and the north of Scotland. This includes conducting observation visits, HR issues, recruitment, developing my team, performing 1-2-1’s and end of year appraisals. Every day can be different, as I am the first point of contact for any problems that occur on a daily basis. I enjoy developing my team and seeing them grow. Studying the apprenticeship course at SERC has provided me with greater knowledge and understanding of leadership and management. It has also provided me with skills that have enabled me to conduct small projects to improve current processes in my work, something I would not have done confidently before the course.

“My learning experience on the apprenticeship was nothing but supportive, I have had two tutors over the two-year course, and they are both fabulous at what they do; they are great at explaining what is needed for the coursework and offering support and guidance whenever I needed it.

“The aspects I enjoyed most about the apprenticeship were building relationships and applying theory to practice. I’ve learnt about leadership styles and models, which has given me a deeper understanding of my current management position, and I have also gained new knowledge and skills in project management and digital transformation, which will future proof my development and progress in my new work role.

“On top of the apprenticeship, I have also recently enrolled in the fast track CMI Chartered Management course at SERC, which is something that would not have been within reach without completing the HLA qualification.”

Emma concludes, “If you’re thinking about studying this course and have any reservations, just do it!! I was very nervous about going back into formal education, with being out of that environment for such a long time. However, the experience has been a positive one and I have gained several qualifications from attending the 2-year HLA course at the college which will help me to progress even higher in my career.”
