SERC Construction Lecturing staff attended the Institution of Civil Engineers pilot session at W5 recently.

Aimed at Post Primary Teachers and lecturing teams in post-16 further education involved in Construction, Engineering, Digital Technologies and Building Services,  the session was a pilot ahead of a larger event planned for October.

Simon Cummings, Deputy Head of School of Construction at SERC said, “The session offered an insight into the many opportunities within civil and infrastructure engineering and showcased the full range of career pathways into civil engineering – academic, technical, vocational and blended."

He added, “We have good insight into our past students’ progression at SERC,  but also had the opportunity to hear from apprentice and graduate engineers on their day-to-day roles, and the subjects and qualifications - apprenticeships, BTECs, T Levels, A-Levels, and other post-16 or post-18 qualifications - that helped shape their direction."

Simon continued, “Myself and fellow construction lecturers, Kim McCoy-Johnston and Kyle Mullholland were able to share our insight into the different discipline and technical professions that align with the built environment that offer students different pathways into civil engineering as a profession, and sound career choice that values both academic and hands-on expertise.”

The Institution of Civil Engineers planned October event will engage directly with learners across both schools and Further Education to highlight civil engineering as a career for students.
