Salon ambitions for Eva

A clear progression route in SERC helps Eva progress - one course at a time.

Eva Sloan

Eva Sloan (16) is currently studying for a Level 2 Traineeship in Beauty Therapy at SERC’s Downpatrick Campus. After completing her GCSEs, Eva left school as she knew that A-levels and university weren’t the right pathway for her. She had always been interested in beauty and make-up, so decided to enrol on a beauty therapy course at SERC.

The Level 2 Traineeship in Beauty Therapy offers students the opportunity to learn technical skills in beauty therapy as well as to develop a range of transversal skills like problem-solving, teamwork and digital literacy.   SERC operates a commercial beauty salon which is open to members of the public, so students also have the opportunity to gain practical experience.

Eva says, “Providing treatments to external clients is great as it allows me to practice the skills I’ve learned and also helps me to build confidence talking to clients.”

After completing the traineeship, Eva is hoping to progress to the Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Beauty Therapy General next year. The Level 3 course covers many spa-based treatments including facials - this is ideal for Eva, whose long-term ambition is to open her own salon specialising in facials and lash extensions.

Eva offers this advice to anyone thinking about a beauty therapy course at SERC: “If you’re interested in beauty therapy, I would 100% recommend the courses at SERC. It’s the best decision I’ve made.  It was scary leaving school and coming somewhere new, but it didn’t take long to make friends and settle in. Now I couldn’t imagine studying anywhere else!”
