Computing students from across SERC put their competitive spirit to the fore in the annual Intercampus Computing Competitions hosted at the college’s Lisburn Campus.

There were titles up for grabs across three specialisms, Computing Robotics, Networking and Programming, with teams vying for glory for both their area of expertise and their campus of study.

Ryan Major Deputy Head of School, Computing, Engineering and Science said, “We were delighted with the turnout for our annual Intercampus Networking and Programming Competitions.  Well done to all the students for taking part and congratulations to all the students who took podium positions.”

In the Computing Robotics Intercampus Competition, participants designed, built, and programmed Spike Prime robots to successfully navigate a maze, demonstrating problem-solving, and coding skills. First place went to Athul Dinesh, Louis Quin, Thomas Moore, all Lisburn Campus. Second place went to Daniel Shepherd, Thomas McVeigh-Reynolds, Leo Gilmore, Aaron Connor, all Bangor Campus; and Runners-Up went to Jack Rogan and  Harlee Mackin from Downpatrick Campus.

First place in the Programming Competition went to a team made up of students from SERC’s Bangor Campus, Alec Luke and from Lisburn Campus, Darren Stewart. Second place went to Lisburn Campus students Oscar Dabrowski and Hayden Foster and Runners-Up went to Downpatrick Campus students Nathan Curran, JJ Hanna and Cole McQueen. Using Sphero BOLT robots, competitors planned, developed, and executed code to guide their device through a maze, focusing on logic, precision, and control.

Finally, in the Networking Intercampus Competition, competitors took part in a Capture the Flag challenge, identifying and retrieving hidden files or information to test their networking and cybersecurity knowledge. First place went to Newtownards Campus students Ola Ogunyade, Tyler Brewley and Mason Peacock. Second place went to Bangor Campus students Samuel Codrington, Pierce Campbell and Blair Dunseath; and Runners-Up were Matthew McKowski and James Cacace from Lisburn Campus.
