‘The Square’ Enhances Student Wellbeing on Newtownards Campus

In December 2025, SERC launched ‘The Square’—a dedicated space in Newtownards Campus, equipped with self-help tools to help students alleviate anxiety and unwind.

The Square was funded by the Crescent Purchasing Consortium and designed by students. It features a spacious sofa, two bean bags, a weighted blanket, fidget toys, colouring books, self-help relaxation books, and a massage chair. The students involved in the design of the area chose the name, as well as the coral and deep blue colours of the space, and the artwork which depicts local community landmarks.

SERC Campus Manager Barbara McNeill says, "We're excited about our new relaxation area, thoughtfully created to nurture our students' mental health and wellbeing. As Campus Manager, I witness daily the challenges students face, and it’s rewarding to provide a dedicated space where they can relax, recharge, and find balance. Student feedback has been overwhelmingly positive—they appreciate the tranquil atmosphere, comfortable seating, and peaceful ambience. The area has quickly become a popular spot for students to pause, refocus, and return to their studies feeling refreshed. Students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities have found this space especially beneficial. Its thoughtful design has made it an invaluable resource for managing anxiety and regulating emotions. We have witnessed students who once struggled in busier environments now thriving in this calm and supportive setting.

“Our students remain our top priority, and initiatives like this highlight our commitment to their happiness and success. We are proud to foster an environment that not only supports academic achievement but also champions inclusivity and equality for everyone."
