Riley Colenso (17), from Killyleagh, progressed to South Eastern Regional College (SERC) from Ballynahinch High School.  He completed the Level 2 NI Traineeship in IT at SERC Downpatrick Campus before moving on to the Level 3 National Diploma in IT – IT Professional.

Riley said, “I missed out on my GCSE Maths but was able to start the Level 2 Traineeship in IT, and during that year I completed essential skills in numeracy which enabled me to progress to the Level 3 in IT.”

He added, “The Level 2 Traineeship was a good foundation for me - I enjoyed the game development and just getting to grips with the computer and the software.   The web development module was really helpful, and I am enjoying this part of the Level 3 course the most. We also had an internal placement as part of the course which involved designing some games to help people use computers.”

Speaking about his plans, Riley said, “I am keen to pursue a career in IT, but I am not sure which direction - I am keeping my options open and looking at  different progression routes."

Riley added, “It didn’t take too long to settle into college.   I think because of the whole pandemic I became shyer, but I am trying to improve my communication skills as I progress through the course – I did have some learning support last year which was helpful.   The tutors in the college and the facilities, including the canteen,  are pretty good.”
