Kids work gaming at innovative Robotics summer camp

Budding computer experts were recently given the opportunity to create their very own robot at an innovative programming summer camp for children aged 14-18 years of age in a fun learning environment.  

Hosted by SERC computing experts, in collaboration with Crossroad Care NI, the two-day boot camp aimed to teach the engineers of tomorrow basic robotics design and programming skills while also firing their imagination and giving them an insight into college life.  

SERC tutor Stephen Devlin, who delivered the programme said “The Summer Camp was designed to open participants minds to the huge variety of exciting career options available to them in the IT sector.

This is the age they will start thinking about their school options and future careers, so coming here and learning what skills and qualifications they will need is a good start. It is a real opportunity for participants to try something completely new while, at the same time, enabling them to experience college life. Amidst the fun of the hands-on approach to learning, participants will get the unique opportunity to learn new life skills.  

“Although it started with a lesson to get things moving, we then left it up to the campers to work on their own creative ideas. It’s a lot of fun for the participants but also a very valuable experience. With technology one of the key drivers of economic development, there is potentially a great future for the industry in Northern Ireland.”
