Past ESOL student Taisiia Varfolomeieva (36), from Dromore, has found a pathway to a newfound passion for teaching while studying at SERC.
Taisiia grew up in Kyiv, Ukraine, where she studied at the National Economic University, achieving a Bachelor's and Master’s Degree in Finance. Her family and her moved to Northern Ireland in 2023 due to the war in Ukraine caused by Russian aggression. She comments, “When I arrived in Northern Ireland, I met other Ukrainian people who were already studying here. Whenever I asked about English courses, everyone highly recommended SERC.” Taisiia began her studies at SERC with the ESOL Level 2 English course. Inspired by the ESOL course and the supportive environment, she decided to continue her education at the college by completing the CACHE Level 3 Diploma in Supporting Teaching and Learning course, as well as the Essential Skills Literacy Level 2 course.
On her ESOL course, she comments, “I really appreciated all the engaging discussions and valuable experiences I gained in the classroom. The atmosphere in class was fantastic - the tutor created a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment where everyone felt valued. The support from the tutor made the learning process both enjoyable and meaningful and I really appreciated how the course was tailored to meet our needs; the tutor spoke clearly and always checked we understood what they meant when communicating with us.
“In class, we expanded our English vocabulary through reading interesting articles and completing homework tasks. We covered grammar and spelling, and learned how to structure presentations, which helped me greatly in later studies. We wrote articles, formal and informal letters, and essays in English too. Lessons were made engaging with quizzes and crosswords. Our speaking skills improved through regular conversations and practical tasks, like writing cover letters and preparing for job interviews.”
She continues, “While studying at SERC, I applied for a role as a classroom assistant in a local primary school and have been working in this position for almost two years. As part of my job, I support a P2 student with autism, help implement education and care plans, reinforce student learning, assist with behavioural strategies, and contribute to creating a safe and inclusive environment. After completing my ESOL course, my tutor encouraged me to enrol on the Level 3 Supporting Teaching and Learning course at SERC, which I successfully completed in May. Thanks to the knowledge and confidence I gained at SERC through my courses, I now feel ready to apply for a permanent position in the teaching field, which will help me stay in the UK.”
She concludes, “I would absolutely recommend SERC - the courses I studied at the college have provided me with a strong foundational knowledge of English and valuable qualifications for future employment. The ESOL course is the best way to start your journey if you're a foreign student; the friendly, inclusive atmosphere and supportive teaching methods will help you gain confidence and achieve your goals quickly. SERC offers great opportunities to anyone who is keen to learn and grow, both personally and professionally.
