SERC Animal Care and Animal Management students were recently visited in class by the PSNI for a talk on animal welfare and the laws surrounding it.

The talk, given by PSNI Wildlife and Animal Welfare Officer Emma Meredith, gave students a better understanding of Wildlife and Animal Welfare Law in Northern Ireland and the role of the PSNI in ensuring those laws are respected. In attendance were Level 2 Animal Care, Level 3 Foundation Diploma in Animal Management, Level 3 Extended Diploma in Animal Management, Level 4 HNC Animal Management, and Level 5 HND Animal Management students in SERC Bangor campus.

Students took part in interactive activities during the talk, such as identifying who is responsible for a variety of legal scenarios related to Domestic Animal Welfare and Wildlife Protection Laws. The students were given prizes for their participation in discussion.

SERC Lecturer in Animal Care / Management Julie McManus said, “Emma was an excellent guest speaker. The talk was engaging, informative and interactive, introducing students not only to legislation relating to animals, but also the role of the PSNI in that legislation. This was extremely valuable to our students, as knowledge of animal welfare law underpins the main responsibilities for those who wish to pursue a career working with animals.”
