VTCT Level 4 Diploma in Reflexology for the Complementary Therapist student Roberta Wallace (52) from Dromara, is enhancing her business and her complimentary therapist skills, while studying part-time at SERC.
After years of working in the social work sector as a carer and believing children require a more holistic approach to social care, as well as being fascinated with complimentary therapy, Roberta decided it was time for a change. Roberta was already familiar with SERC as her two daughters had studied courses at the college. She had seen how her daughters grew and were given support for their dyslexia – something Roberta also has - while at SERC, and so she felt that her local SERC campus would offer the right supportive learning environment for her. After attending an open evening, for the first time as a prospective student rather than a parent, Roberta applied for the Level 3 Reflexology course, completed it, and is now studying her current Level 4 Reflexology course.
On her course Roberta says, “Coming from the Level 3 Reflexology course to the Level 4 Reflexology course felt like such a natural progression. The course covers so many areas of complimentary therapy – you learn about body reading, foot reading, paternity, fertility, cancer treatment, and much more. If you were to do a course on each of these areas separately, it would cost a fortune so the cost-effectiveness of learning them all thoroughly through one course, with the support of an industry experienced tutor is fantastic. For the first time in my life, I’ve found a subject that I am genuinely enthusiastic about doing the homework for because I find it so interesting!”
“There’s a balance of theory and practice on the course – we do written assignments, group work, and case studies. Guest speakers are also brought in who work in the industries we learn about – most are nurses, midwives or work in cancer treatment. It’s very inspirational as a lot of the guest speakers that talk to us are past students who completed this course at the college and then went on to find success in their chosen sector, so it really shows what you can achieve through the course. Clients also come into class for treatments, and we get to put all the theory we learn into practice while we work on them. It’s very calming work; clients leave the classroom feeling relaxed and you feed off that energy.”
She continues, “I’ve had my own business – Healing Touch Reflexology, based in Dromara - for a year now. I work part-time in my business and part-time in my social work job. The part-time nature of the course is great for structuring my work schedules around. Everything that I’m learning on the course is also really helping me improve my skills that I use in my business and growing my clients. The Entrepreneur Club at SERC has been great too for giving me information on how to market my business.”
Roberta concludes, “I would absolutely recommend this course, I’ve really enjoyed it. Returning to learning has been perfect, so already I’m asking myself what I’ll be studying next at SERC in September when new courses start. I’ve grown a lot in the two years I’ve been studying here; I’ve developed confidence in my own skills, and my business is growing thanks to the skills I'm developing on the course. I believe education is the cornerstone for all development, and SERC is the perfect environment for developing yourself further.”
