Alumni student living the dream at MSport

Former SERC Motorsport Engineering student Peter Maze has been making a name for himself in the industry. Peter competed his course at SERC and now works as a Rally Technician for World Champion rally team MSport.

Having achieved the required grades from his two-year Motorsports Engineering course at SERC, 24-year-old Peter who is from Aghalee, secured his dream place at university to study the BSc (Hons) degree in Competition Car Preparation and Technology at Myerscough College.

Commenting on his time at SERC, Peter explained: "I attended SERC's open day to see what courses were on offer. I always had an interest in motorsports and when I heard they offered this course I decided to apply.  I would definitely recommend the Motorsport Engineering course at SERC to anyone who is interested in a career in motorsport. Thanks to the support from SERC I can safely say that I gained a place at my chosen university and a career in the industry I am so passionate about.”

The two-year course, which is equivalent to three A levels, covers a range of modules including vehicle chassis systems, motorsports vehicle and engine preparation, welding technology, fault diagnosis and rectification, diagnosing and rectifying motorsport chassis system and electrical/electronic equipment faults, setting up and inspecting a motorsport vehicle during competition diagnosing and rectifying motorsport engines and transmissions.

Throughout the course students get the opportunity to gain vital employability skills through attendance and assessment at high profile live rally competitions, while at the same time gaining valuable hands on experience working on the range of College vehicles and their very own Mitsubishi Evo – a custom built rally car prepared by the SERC students in their industry standard workshop.  

During his studies Peter secured placement with MSport, when he was selected to be part of the Drive DMack Fiesta Trophy rally service team - part of the World Rally Championships. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity that saw Peter travel around Europe conducting pre-race and race preparation and gaining vital experience working in the pit stops, service area maintenance and remote testing.

Motorsport Engineering tutor Basil Barnes was obviously proud of his student's success and said "What Peter has achieved is fantastic and we are all immensely proud. SERC students are extremely sought after. In fact, upon completion of their course, 100 percent of SERC Motorsports students this year either have job offers or have secured places in prestigious graduate programmes.”
