SERC Apprentices and Trainees visit Unitrunk
Students get a safety talk at Unitrunk visit.

Students from South Eastern Regional College (SERC) have gained valuable industry insight during an educational visit to the Unitrunk manufacturing facility in Lisburn.

Unitrunk is an internationally renowned manufacturer of innovative cable management products and associated support systems. Their Rapid Installation System products are designed to save installers significant time and money onsite.

Electrical Installation students from the Level 2 Traineeship and Level 3  Apprenticeship NI programmes, based at the SERC’s Lisburn Campus, toured the factory to experience first-hand the manufacturing processes behind electrical containment systems widely used across the construction and engineering sectors.

During the visit, students participated in a comprehensive guided tour, observing how steel containment products such as cable tray, trunking, basket systems and support brackets are designed, manufactured and prepared for distribution. This provided learners with a practical understanding of materials and systems they will encounter throughout their careers in electrical installation.

The group also saw advanced manufacturing equipment in operation and developed an appreciation for the importance of quality control, health and safety procedures, and modern production methods within a large-scale industrial environment. Industry staff at Unitrunk shared their expertise, outlining how containment systems are applied in commercial and industrial installations.

The visit offered students a valuable opportunity to bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world application, strengthening their understanding of how electrical installation materials are produced and supplied to projects across the UK and beyond.

Christopher Patterson, Lecturer, said, “This was a fantastic experience for our students.   It is important to engage directly with employers to help enhance learners’ knowledge and to increase awareness of the wider electrical manufacturing sector.   We would like to thank Unitrunk for hosting the visit and providing students with an informative and interesting learning experience.”
