An ‘Introduction for Women in Construction’ course has recently launched with its first cohort at SERC Lisburn campus.

The three-day course, which is funded by Inclusive Futures and supported by the Skills Fund (part of the Department for Economy’s Economic Vision), aims to inspire women to pursue roles in the construction industry.

The course equips the participants with the essential skills and knowledge necessary for career paths in construction, including Construction Skills Register card training to enhance employability and meet safety standards, how to use Computer-Aided Design and how to carry out surveying tasks. Women from across the construction sector are involved in the course delivery, including Ciara Lappin and Emma Downey from Doran Consulting, Theresa McErlean from Heron Bros. and Kelly Guiney from Tetratech, who all shared their experiences in the industry with the course participants. These established industry women worked alongside SERC Lecturer in Construction and the Built Environment Kim McCoy Johnston and SERC Level 3 Construction students Rebecca Cash, Aimee Armstrong and Cerys Power to deliver an introductory presentation to the new cohort.

Kim McCoy Johnston says, “This initiative plays a crucial role in widening participation and empowering women to pursue meaningful, skilled careers in construction. Women left the sessions inspired, informed, and ready to take their next steps whether into study, apprenticeships, or employment.”.
