October is attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) month. ADHD is a condition that affects people’s behaviour - people with ADHD can seem restless, may have trouble concentrating and may act on impulse.
ADHD Awareness Month was initiated to address the misconceptions and stigma surrounding ADHD and to promote accurate information and support for those affected by the condition. It has since grown into a global awareness campaign, with the goal of improving the lives of individuals with ADHD.
The theme for this year is “The Many Faces of ADHD” which aims to increase awareness and understanding of ADHD through short promotional videos. This initiative provides a platform for individuals, healthcare providers, educators, and advocates to share information and resources related to ADHD.
Symptoms of ADHD tend to be noticed at an early age, with symptoms sometimes improving with age. Click here to learn about the 10 must-know signs you might have ADHD.
If someone is experiencing symptoms the first thing an individual needs to do is to speak to their GP; a GP may refer them to an ADHD specialist for an assessment. If a GP thinks a young person needs mental health support before or after the assessment, they may do a referral to Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS).
