Returning to education can be daunting for anyone, but as Armagh man Premdan Majhi found, harnessing your passion for the subject you love - in his case, science - gives you the motivation to keep progressing.
Premdan, (43), completed the equivalent of GCSEs in India before relocating to Northern Ireland when he got married. Premdan has been settled in Armagh for over 15 years. He returned to education to complete a Level 3 Access Diploma in Applied Science at SRC, before progressing to SERC to commence the HNC in Applied Sciences.
Currently employed by Almac, Premdan is a Supervisor in the Manufacturing Department. He said, “After I completed the Level 3 Access Diploma, I was keen to continue as I had already taken a gap in my education. I was back into the way of study, so it made sense to move on to a higher-level course to keep progressing. It was the careers team at SRC who helped me find the course at SERC. I applied online and did an interview with the tutor and the more I heard about the course, the more I knew it was the one for me."
Speaking about the course he said, “I am really enjoying the course, especially the practical side. Because I am doing Applied Science, I fully expected to be doing practical lab work and I find it very exciting."
Premdan, who is self-funding his studies, said, “I am doing the course as I want to progress in the science sector. After the HNC, I hope to top up to a HND or a degree qualification, which will open more opportunities for me and my career"
“My experience of the course to date has been great. Everyone is extremely helpful. The lecturers, especially Dr Bennett, are so enthusiastic about science, you cannot help but get excited about it yourself. There is great camaraderie in the class too, if you miss something, someone is always willing to help you catch up.”
