SERC Graphic Design Lecturer Ann Harrison and her husband, SERC Creative Media Lecturer John Clerkin, have created an animation for the BBC’s 2 Minute Masterpiece series.
The series is designed to let emerging filmmakers in Northern Ireland have their voices heard through their short films and animations, which are worked on in collaboration with the BBC and aired on BBC iPlayer. No strangers to the series, Ann and John had an animated short entitled ‘Lockdown Blues’ published as part of the series in 2020. This year, they were invited back by the BBC and have now created a new animated short for the series entitled ‘Yes Sister’. This new film interweaves BBC archive footage from the 60s and 70s with photographs and testimony from Susan Harrison, Ann’s mother, on her eventful years as a nurse in Belfast’s Royal Victoria Hospital and as a midwife training in Edinburgh. Ann says, “Bringing our project to life alongside the incredible BBC crew and our inspiring mentor, Joel Simon, was a truly rewarding experience. As part of the process, John and I worked together to plan out the short and then divided up the tasks based on skillset, so I completed a lot of the character animation, designs and Illustration and John got the motion graphics and edit, along with a lot of work on the sound and integrating the BBC footage. The BBC team’s support helped shape the final short into something stronger, more focused, and more impactful.”
