Course Overview

This course is a two year programme which is equivalent to two A-Levels.  In the first year of the programme you will complete an Extended Certificate (1 A-Level equivalent) and will have the opportunity to exit at this stage. Those progressing to year two will top-up to the diploma. (2 A-Level equivalent)  

The qualification gives learners specialist knowledge and technical skills, enabling entry to employment within the field of coaching, or possibly progression to a related higher-education course. (may require additional qualifications)   The course will give you a wide range of skills and behaviours required for working in the sports coaching industry. Learners will develop their coaching, leadership and instructing skills so that they can work independently as a sports coach, ensuring safe and effective coaching for their sport of choice.  This qualification includes a minimum of 20 hours’ work placement.  There is an attendance commitment requirement of 15 hours per week.

Ideal If:

You want to progress directly to employment or self-employment in the coaching sector as Sports Coach. Additionally, the breadth of the optional content in the qualification allows learners to widen their progression opportunities. Learners may progress to a number of different higher-education courses or to work in the outdoor activities sector in associated roles, such as business support, sports development, tourism and events.

You'll Learn:

The underpinning knowledge, skills and behaviours needed to work in the sports coaching sector. You will focus on exploring the wide range of skills and techniques required to be a successful and effective coach whilst also studying the factors affecting health and safety, including in respect of the equipment and facilities in a coaching environment. You will develop and reflect on your personal skills whilst delivering sports coaching sessions.

You'll Progress:

This qualification is aimed at learners looking to progress to employment as a Sports Coach or Sports Development Officer.  The qualification is likely to attract UCAS Tariff points (pending application approval by BTEC) and is recognised by higher-education providers as contributing to entry requirements for many related courses. When combined with other qualifications, such as A Levels or another BTEC National Foundation Diploma, in a two-year, full-time study programme, learners can progress to higher education degree programmes.

You'll Need:

 A minimum of 4Cs at GCSE level (preferably including English and Maths or equivalent) or a Pass at level 2 and a keen interest in sport, coaching and sports development.
